      Catholic Philosophical Studies

       

      The Master of Arts in Catholic Philosophical Studies is an academic degree program which is designed
      to provide students with a graduate level understanding of philosophy in the Catholic tradition.

      The program focuses on the nature of philosophy and its significance in a Catholic setting. A wide range of topics are covered, from the classical foundations of philosophy in antiquity, through the medieval age, to both modern and post- modern challenges.
       

  • Degree Requirements 16 courses (48 credits)
    with 4 languages courses offered

    • PROPAEDEUTIC YEAR

      Introduction to Sacred Scripture

      Fundamentals of Catholic Doctrine

      DISCIPLESHIP YEAR I

      FALL (*must be taken concurrently during the first semester)
      Logical Analysis *
      History of Ancient Philosophy *
      Introduction to Philosophy in the Catholic Tradition *
      Ecclesiastical Latin I (non-credit)

      SPRING
      Philosophy of Knowledge
      History of Medieval Philosophy
      Philosophy of Nature
      Ecclesiastical Latin II (non-credit)

       

    • DISCIPLESHIP YEAR II

      FALL
      History of Modern Philosophy
      Philosophical Anthropology
      Metaphysics
      The Philosophy of Saint Thomas Aquinas
      Biblical Greek I (non-credit)

      SPRING
      History of Contemporary Philosophy
      Ethics, Natural Law and Politics
      Natural Theology
      Faith and Reason
      Biblical Greek II (non-credit)

      Summative requirement: Comprehensive exam.

  • Admission Requirements

    • All prospective applicants to the MACPS Program must fulfill the following academic requirements:

      1. Bachelor of Arts degree from an accredited institution or its equivalent (120 credits in college-level studies)

      2. For ESL applicants, successful completion of the TOEFL exam with a score of 80 or higher (90 or better recommended). Applicants scoring lower than 80 can be accepted on condition they take remedial English courses during their first academic year at SJS.

  • Application Process

    • 1.  Complete the online application.

      2. Submit official transcript(s) from each undergraduate and graduate institution attended to:

           3. Submit two (2) letters of recommendation from individuals who are familiar with your academic and/or pastoral background.

           4. Submit  proof of immunization (for all students born on or after January 1, 1957 and attending classes on campus).

           5. Submit a valid government issued photo identification (Passport, Driver’s License/Permit, or US Military ID).

           6.  Current photo (headshot only).

           7. Arrange for an interview with Christine Hammill-Cregan, J.D., M.S.W., Associate Dean.

      Upon initial acceptance into the Master of Arts programs, one is considered to be a non-matriculated student until one has completed six (6) credits at the Seminary with an earned grade average of “B” or better.

  • Tuition and Fees

    • Tutition
      Credit - per 3 credit course                               $1,500.00
      Audit - per 3 credit course                                $500.00

      For first time students, a 50% discount is offered for the first course (credit or audit).

      All full-time employees of the Archdiocese of New York, the Diocese of Brooklyn, and the Diocese of Rockville Centre, including full-time employees at parishes and schools in these (arch)dioceses, are eligible for a 50% tuition remission, subject to an annual employment verification.

      All employees of St. Joseph's Seminary, full-time and part-time, are eligible to receive a full reduction of tuition charges. All fees, including application, registration, and graduation fees, remain the responsibility of the student/employee.

  • Accreditation and Location

    • St. Joseph's Seminary is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) and the Association of Theological Schools (ATS) and approved by the New York State Education Department.
